Généralités

Dans la plupart des situations exprimant la possession, la disponibilité avoir sera traduit par to have ou to have got: j'ai des livres/enfants/employés = I have (got) books/children/employees; je n'ai pas assez de place/temps = I don't have (ou I haven't got) enough room/time; la maison a l'électricité/cinq pièces = the house has electricity/five rooms; j'aurai mon visa demain = I'll have my visa tomorrow; ils vont/elle va avoir un bébé en mai = they're/she's having a baby in May

Les autres sens de avoir, verbe transitif simple (obtenir, porter, triompher de etc), sont traités dans l'entrée plus bas

On notera qu'en règle générale les expressions figées du type avoir raison, avoir beau, en avoir marre, il y a belle lurette, il y a de quoi etc seront traitées respectivement sous raison, beau, marre, lurette, quoi etc

avoir = verbe auxiliaire

avoir verbe auxiliaire se traduit toujours par to have sauf dans le cas du passé composé: ils avaient révisé les épreuves quand je suis parti = they had revised the proofs when I left; quand ils eurent (ou ont eu) révisé les épreuves, ils sont partis = when they had revised the proofs, they left; ils auront fini demain = they will have finished tomorrow; il aurait (ou eût) aimé parler = he would have liked to speak. Lorsqu'on a un passé composé en français, il sera traduit soit par le prétérit: ils ont révisé les épreuves en juin = they revised the proofs in June; ils ont révisé les épreuves avant ma démission = they revised the proofs before I resigned; je suis sûr qu'il l'a laissé là en partant = I'm sure he left it here when he left; soit par le ‘present perfect’: ils ont révisé les épreuves plusieurs fois = they have revised the proofs several times

avoir = verbe semi-auxiliaire

De même, avoir semi-auxiliaire dans les tournures attributives du type avoir le coeur malade/les genoux cagneux, se traduit de façon variable ( to be ou to have) selon la structure adoptée par l'anglais pour rendre ces tournures; voir, en l'occurrence, les entrées coeur et cagneux; mais c'est en général sous l'adjectif que ce problème est traité

Emplois avec à

avoir à + infinitif

Exprimant l'obligation ou la convenance, cette locution verbale se rend généralement par to have to suivi de l'infinitif: j'aurais à ajouter que... = I would have to add that...; tu auras à rendre compte de tes actes = you'll have to account for your actions; je n'ai pas à vous raconter ma vie = I don't have to tell you my life-story; vous n'aviez pas à le critiquer = you didn't have to criticize him; il n'a pas à te parler sur ce ton = he shouldn't speak to you in that tone of voice; j'ai beaucoup à faire = I have (ou I've got) a lot to do; tu n'as rien à faire? = don't you have (ou haven't you got GB) anything to do?; j'ai à faire un rapport/un rapport à faire = I have to write a report/a report to write

n'avoir qu'à

Quand cette locution équivaut à suffir, plusieurs possibilités de traduction se présentent: tu n'avais qu'à = tu aurais dû, elle se rend par should have suivi du participe passé; tu n'as qu'à leur écrire = you only have to (ou you've only got to GB, ou all you have to do is) write to them; tu n'auras que cinq minutes à attendre = you'll only have to wait five minutes; tu n'avais qu'à faire attention/me le dire/partir plus tôt = you should have paid attention/told me/left earlier

Emplois avec en

expression du temps: en avoir pour

L'anglais distingue généralement entre une tâche précise ( to take) et une activité ou absence indéterminée ( to be): vous en avez (ou aurez) pour combien de temps? (à faire ce travail) = how long will it take you?, (à me faire attendre) = how long are you going to be?; j'en ai pour cinq minutes (= je reviens dans...) = I'll be five minutes; je n'en ai pas pour longtemps = I won't be long; j'en ai eu pour deux heures = it took me two hours

expression du coût: en avoir pour

Se traduit par to cost suivi du pronom personnel complément correspondant au pronom sujet français (voir aussi argent): j'en ai eu pour 500 francs = it cost me 500 francs; nous en aurons pour combien? = how much will it cost us?

(sl) en avoir = to have balls (sl); ne pas en avoir = to have no balls (sl)

Expression de l'existence

il y a du lait dans le réfrigérateur = there's some milk in the fridge; il y a des souris/des araignées au grenier = there are mice/spiders in the attic; il n'y a pas/plus de riz = there's no/no more rice ou there isn't any/any more rice; il doit y avoir (ou il y aura) des souris dans le grenier = there must be mice in the attic; il n'y a pas eu moins de 50 concurrents = there were no less than 50 competitors; il y a chapeau et chapeau = there are hats and hats; il y aura Paul, Marie,... = there will be Paul, Marie,...; et il y aura Paul et Marie! = and Paul and Marie will be there!; il n'y a pas de raison de faire/que tu fasses = there's no reason to do/for you to do; il a dû y avoir quelque chose de grave = something serious must have happened; qu'est-ce qu'il y a? Attention, un mot singulier en français peut être traduit par un mot fonctionnant comme un pluriel en anglais: il y a beaucoup de monde = there are a lot of people; y avait-il du monde? = were there many people?

Expression du temps

il est venu il y a longtemps/cinq ans = he came a long time/five years ago; il y a cinq ans que j'habite ici = I have been living here for five years; il y aura cinq ans demain que j'ai pris ma retraite = it will be five years tomorrow since I retired; il y aura deux mois mardi que je travaille ici = I will have been working here for two months on Tuesday; il n'y a que deux mois que je suis/travaille ici = I have only been/been working here for two months; il n'y a pas cinq minutes qu'il est parti = he left less than five minutes ago; il n'y a pas 200 ans que l'espèce est éteinte = the species has been extinct for no more than 200 years; il y a combien de temps/d'années que tu habites ici? = how long/many years have you lived here?; il y a combien de temps/d'années qu'on ne s'est vus? = how long is it/many years has it been since we last met?

Expression de la distance

Elle se fait généralement à l'aide du verbe to be: combien y a-t-il jusqu'à la gare/d'ici à la gare? = how far is it to the station/to the station from here?; combien y a-t-il encore jusqu'à la gare? = how much further is it to the station?; il y a 15 kilomètres jusqu'à/d'ici à la gare = the station is 15 kilometres [BrE] away/away from here; il y a au moins 15 kilomètres = it's at least 15 kilometres [BrE] away; il y a encore 15 kilomètres = it's another 15 kilometres [BrE]; il n'y a pas/que 200 mètres d'ici à la gare = it's less than/only 200 metres [BrE] from here to the station

il y a à + infinitif

il y a à manger pour quatre = there's enough food for four; il y a (beaucoup) à faire = there's a lot to be done (ceci traduit également il y a de quoi faire); souligner le danger/l'avantage qu'il y a à faire = to stress how dangerous/advantageous it is to do; les risques qu'il y avait/aurait à faire = how risky it was/would be to do; il n'y a pas à hésiter/s'inquiéter = there's no need to hesitate/worry; il n'y a pas à discuter! = no arguments!; il n'y a qu'à le repeindre! - y a qu'à (colloq), c'est facile à dire! = all you have to do is repaint it! - just repaint it! easier said than done!

Remarque: certaines formes personnelles du verbe avoir sont équivalentes au présentatif il y a. 1 The Supreme Being, the Creator, the first deity of the sacred Hindu Trinity, to whom is en- trusted the work of creating the world. [The accounts of the creation of the world differ in many respects; but, according to Manu Smṛiti, the universe was enveloped in darkness, and the self-existent Lord manifested himself dispelling the gloom. He first created the waters and deposited in them a seed. This seed became a golden egg, in which he himself was born as Brahmā-- the progenitor of all the worlds. Then the Lord divided the egg into two parts, with which he constructed heaven and earth. He then created the ten Prajāpatis or mind-born sons who completed the work of creation. According to another account (Rāmāyaṇa) Brahmā sprang from ether; from him was descended marīchi, and his son was Kaśyapa. From Kaśyapa sprang Vivasvata, and Manu sprang from him. Thus Manu was the procreator of all human beings. According to a third account, the Supreme deity, after dividing the golden egg, separated himself into two parts, male and female, from which sprang Virāj and from him Manu; cf. Ku.2.7. and Ms.1.32 et seq. Mythologically Brahman is represented as being born in a lotus which sprang from the navel of Viṣṇu, and as creating the world by an illicit connection with his own daughter Sarasvatī. The expression τοῦ ἰδίου υἱοῦ οὐκ ἐφείσατο Ro 8:32 emphasizes the extraordinary nature of God’s gift: did not spare his very own Son (Paul’s association here with the ref. to pandemic generosity, ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν πάντων παρέδωκεν αὐτο͂ν, contributes a semantic component to ἰ. in this pass.; for the pandemic theme see e.g. OGI 339, 29f; for donation of one’s own resources, ibid. 104; IGR 739, II, 59–62. For the term ὁ ἴδιος υἱός, but in difft. thematic contexts, see e.g. Diod S 17, 80, 1 of Parmenio; 17, 118, 1 of Antipater. ① the amount at which someth. is valued, price, value (s. ApcMos 18 νόησον τὴν τιμήν τοῦ ξύλου Eden’s tree) esp. selling price (Hdt. et al.; O. Wilck II, 318, 3; POxy 1382, 18 [II A.D.]) συνεψήφισαν τὰς τιμὰς αὐτῶν (s. συμψηφίζω) Ac 19:19. Also concrete the price received in selling someth. 5:2. W. the gen. of that for which the price is paid (Is 55:1; Jos., Vi. 153, Ant. 4, 284; TestZeb 3:2) ἡ τιμὴ τοῦ χωρίου the price paid for the piece of ground vs. 3. ἡ τιμὴ τοῦ τετιμημένου (τιμάω 1) Mt 27:9. τιμὴ αἵματος the money paid for a bloody deed (αἷμα 2a), blood money vs. 6. Pl. (Diod S 5, 71, 3; 6=prize, price, reward) τὰς τιμὰς τῶν πιπρασκομένων Ac 4:34. τὰς τιμὰς αὐτῶν the prices that they received for themselves 1 Cl 55:2.—W. the gen. of price ᾧ (by attr. of the rel. for ὅ) ὠνήσατο Ἀβραὰμ τιμῆς ἀργυρίου which Abraham had bought for a sum of silver Ac 7:16. Abs. τιμῆς at or for a price, for cash (Hdt. 7, 119; PTebt 5, 185; 194; 220 [118 B.C.]; BGU 1002, 13 δέδωκά σοι αὐτὰ τιμῆς.—B-D-F §179, 1; Rob. 510f; Dssm., LO 275f [LAE 323f]) ἠγοράσθητε τιμῆς 1 Cor 6:20; 7:23 (ἀγοράζω 2).—οὐκ ἐν τιμῇ τινι Col 2:23 may be a Latinism (cp. Ovid, Fasti 5, 316 nec in pretio fertilis hortus; Livy 39, 6, 9; Seneca, Ep. 75, 11. See Lohmeyer ad loc.) are of no value (NRSV). See also s.v. πλησμονή.—GBornkamm, TLZ 73 ’48, col. 18, 2 observes that τ. here has nothing to do with ‘honor’, as it does in the expr. ἐν τιμῇ εἶναι X., An. 2, 5, 38; Herodian 4, 2, 9; Arrian, Anab. 4, 21, 10; Lucian, De Merc. Cond. 17.

ⓐ act., the showing of honor, reverence, or respect as an action (X., Cyr. 1, 6, 11; Diod S 17, 76, 3; Herodian 4, 1, 5; 2 Macc 9:21; Just., A I, 13, 1; Tat. 32, 1; Ath. 30, 2; Theoph. Ant. 1, 11 [p. 82, 5]; usually as a commendation for performance; s. Reader, Polemo 280) 1 Ti 6:1. ταύτῃ τῇ τιμῇ τιμήσωμεν τ. υἱὸν τοῦ θεοῦ GPt 3:9. So perh. τῇ τιμῇ ἀλλήλους προηγούμενοι Ro 12:10 (s. προηγέομαι 3). Pl. οἵ πολλαῖς τιμαῖς ἐτίμησαν ἡμᾶς Ac 28:10 (cp. Diod S 11, 38, 5 τιμαῖς ἐτίμησε τὸν Γέλωνα; OGI 51, 13 τοὺς τοιούτους τιμᾶν ταῖς πρεπούσαις τιμαῖς; Jos., Ant. 20, 68. In 1 Th 4:4 τιμή may well be understood in this sense, if σκεῦος refers to a female member of the household; s. also c.—For the τιμαί that belong to the physician, s. Sir 38:1; s. 3 below). Of the demonstrations of reverence that characterize polytheistic worship (OGI 56, 9 αἱ τιμαὶ τῶν θεῶν; Himerius, Or. 8 [=23], 11 ἡ θεῶν τιμή.—S. Orig., C. Cels. 8, 57, 29) Dg 2:8; Judean worship 3:5a.

ⓑ pass. the respect that one enjoys, honor as a possession. The believers are promised τιμή 1 Pt 2:7 (it is given them w. Christ, the λίθος ἔντιμος vs. 6) but see 4 below; cp. IMg 15. τιμὴν ἔχειν be honored (Hdt. 1, 168) J 4:44; Hb 3:3. τιμήν τινι (ἀπο)διδόναι Ro 13:7; 1 Cor 12:24; Rv 4:9 (w. δόξαν). τιμήν τινι ἀπονέμειν (Ath. 32, 3) 1 Pt 3:7; 1 Cl 1:3; MPol 10:2. τιμήν τινι περιτιθέναι 1 Cor 12:23. λαβεῖν τιμήν (w. δόξαν) 2 Pt 1:17; (w. δόξαν and δύναμιν; cp. FPfister, Philol 84, 1929, 1–9) Rv 4:11; 5:12 (w. δύναμις, as Plut., Mor. 421e: the divinity grants both of them if it is addressed by its various names). τ. τιμῆς μεταλαβεῖν Dg 3:5b. ἑαυτῷ τιμὴν περιποιεῖσθαι Hm 4, 4, 2 (w. δόξαν).—εἰς τιμήν for honor=to be honored σκεῦος, a vessel that is honored (or dishonored) by the use to which it is put Ro 9:21; 2 Ti 2:20f. εἰς τιμήν τινος for someone’s honor=that the pers. might be honored (Cornutus 28 p. 55, 7 εἰς τιμὴν τῆς Δήμητρος; OGI 111, 26 εἰς τιμὴν Πτολεμαίου; εἰς τιμὴν τῶν Αἰώνων Iren. 1, 5, 1 [Harv. I 42, 16]; εἰς τ. γονέων Did., Gen. 50, 21) IEph 2:1; 21:1, 2; IMg 3:2; ITr 12:2; ISm 11:2; IPol 5:2b; cp. vs. 2a (εἰς τιμὴν τῆς σαρκὸς τοῦ κυρίου). On εἰς λόγον τιμῆς IPhld 11:2 s. λόγος 2c.—An outstanding feature of the use of τ., as already shown in several passages, is its combination w. δόξα (Dio Chrys. 4, 116; 27 [44], 10; Appian, Bell. Civ. 3, 18 §68; Arrian, Ind. 11, 1; Plut., Mor. 486b; Jos., Ant. 12, 118; Iren. 1, 2, 6 [Harv. I 23, 8]): of earthly possessions τὴν δόξαν καὶ τὴν τιμὴν τῶν ἐθνῶν Rv 21:26 (τιμή concr.=an object of value: Ezk 22:25). Of the unique, God-given position of the ruler 1 Cl 61:1, 2 (in the latter pass. w. ἐξουσία). Mostly of heavenly possessions: Ro 2:7 (w. ἀφθαρσία), vs. 10 (w. εἰρήνη); 1 Pt 1:7 (w. ἔπαινος); 1 Cl 45:8. Christ is (acc. to Ps 8:6) crowned w. δόξα and τιμή Hb 2:7, 9. God is called (amid many other predicates) φῶς, τιμή, δόξα, ἰσχύς, ζωή Dg 9:6.—Hence esp. in the doxological formulas (God as the recipient of τ.: Eur., Bacch. 323 θεῷ τιμὴν διδόναι; Paus. 9, 13, 2; Ps 28:1 [w. δόξα]; 95:7 [w. δόξα]; TestAbr B 14 p. 119, 3 [Stone p. 86]; ApcEsdr 7:16 [w. δόξα, κράτο]; Philo; Jos., C. Ap. 2, 206) 1 Ti 1:17 (w. δόξα); 6:16 (w. κράτος αἰώνιον); w. δόξα and κράτος Jd 25 v.l.; Rv 5:13 (w. δόξα et al.); 7:12 (w. δόξα et al.); 1 Cl 64 (w. δόξα et al.); 65:2 (w. δόξα et al.); MPol 20:2; 21 (both w. δόξα et al.).

ⓒ as a state of being, respectability (cp. τίμιος 1c) 1 Th 4:4 (w. ἁγιασμός). If τιμή is here to be understood as a nomen actionis, the pass. belongs in a.

ⓓ place of honor, (honorable) office (Hom. et al. [s. FBleek on Hb 5:4]; pap. In Joseph. of the high-priestly office: Ant. 12.42 Ἐλεαζάρῳ τῷ ἀρχιερεῖ ταύτην λαβόντι τὴν τιμήν; 157 and oft.) οὐχ ἑαυτῷ τις λαμβάνει τὴν τιμήν no one takes the office of his own accord Hb 5:4.

③ honor conferred through compensation, honorarium, compensation (testament of Lycon [III B.C.] Fgm. 15 W., in Diog. L. 5, 72, a physician’s honorarium; Sir 38:1; s. 2a above), so prob. 1 Ti 5:17 (MDibelius, Hdb. ad loc. and see s.v. διπλοῦς).—Mng. 2b is also poss. In that case cp. Ael. Aristid. 32, 3 K.=12 p. 134 D.: διπλῇ τιμῇ τιμῆσαι.—MGreindl (s. δόξα, end).
